This Unicorn cake turned out so pretty. Rainbow layers, piñata candy in the centre, gold horn and a sweet sweet face.

I loved everything about this cake, except for one thing that will always haunt me, the person who ordered it for her little daughter didn’t like the flavour. They were very impressed with the entire cake, colours, effects, you name it, but when the time to eat it came they did not enjoy it, mainly because of the texture. I gotta admit, I did something dumb, I modified my usual vanilla recipe to make it less sweet…. The dumb part wasn’t to modify the recipe, was to do it on a real order without running some trials beforehand.

I’m a self-taught home baker, I’ve always been hesitant about taking orders from people, but as family, friends, friends of friends and even strangers from the internet approach me to ask me if I can make a little something for a special someone, my confidence has clearly grown. I’ve gotten the most amazing and heart warming thank you messages and reviews and there’s always people asking if I want to do this for a living (and I don’t think so, not yet)… However, one bad review kills me, the fact that for me is just one cake, but for somebody else was THE ONE cake and they didn’t like it, kills me!

Lesson learned, the very hard way. And I will continue baking many many more cakes, for sure… But only using 100% proved recipes. Also, when baking for somebody else, make sure to specify things like “eat at room temperature” for better results, never assume.
