The watercolor cake can be done in so many possible ways, in this case I used a bit of a Spatula painting technique in the most basic way… It turns out very artsy looking and will for sure be a showstopper. I made this cake for two friends celebrating their birthdays together, they’re both very fun, colourful, untraditional and super artistic, so this direction felt like it was the right one. The edge was rough and painted in copper to give it more dimension; the cake was a hit at the party, not to mention, I was beyond happy with the results.
This technique is very simple, there are two things that must be taken into consideration and you’re all set:
– When you ice the cake with your base buttercream, it most be even, straight and perfect, is not one of those cases where you can fix when decorating if any inclination or uneven sides (Swiss meringue buttercream is better than American here, given the texture and way the colours incorporate with each other).
– Plan your color palette if you want more vibrant colours. Separate little bits of icing and colour them in advance, if you want a more vibrant finish I recommend colouring your icing the day before, then before applying just mix again and you’ll notice how the colour has gotten richer overnight.
– Follow your instinct and let your inner artist do the work, it’s actually quite relaxing and very satisfactory.
