If you’re starting your cake decorating journey (or even if you’ve been baking for a while), it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed.
There are so many tools. So many gadgets. So many “must-haves.” But here’s the truth: you don’t need everything, you just need the right basics.
Today I’m sharing the essential cake tools I truly use and recommend for home bakers — the ones that make decorating easier, cleaner, and honestly way more fun. These are the tools that grew with me from beginner cakes to more polished designs, some of these tools were with me from the very beginning, some I wish I had then.
I’ll be adding photos to show exactly how I use each one so you can see them in action.
Kitchen scale
If you buy one thing first — make it a kitchen scale.
Measuring by weight instead of cups will completely change your baking. Your cakes will bake more evenly, textures improve, and your recipes become consistent every single time.
Cups are fine when you’re learning. But a scale? That’s what makes you confident.
Measuring spoons and cups
Even with a scale, you still need reliable measuring spoons and cups for smaller quantities. Invest in a sturdy set. Avoid the super thin plastic ones that bend and warp. A good set lasts years.
3-inch deep cake pans
Not all cake pans are created equal. I always recommend 3-inch deep cake pans for home bakers.
Why?
- Taller cakes look more professional
- You get cleaner layers
- Less risk of overflow
- Better structure for stacking
If you want that bakery-style tall cake look — this is the secret.
Cooling rack
Please don’t leave cakes to cool inside the pan on the counter.
A cooling rack allows air to circulate underneath your cake, preventing soggy bottoms and condensation. Not to mention, you’ll need them for all your lovely cookies.
It sounds simple. But it makes a difference.
Cake slicer (for clean layers)
If leveling cakes stresses you out, a cake slicer is your friend.
It helps:
- Keep layers even
- Avoid slanted cakes
- Reduce trimming waste
Clean, level layers = stable cakes.
Turntable (game changer for decorating)
This is where decorating becomes fun. A turntable allows you to spin the cake while smoothing frosting instead of awkwardly rotating your whole body around it.
If you’re serious about cake decorating at home, this tool changes everything.
Offset spatula
Offset spatulas are small but powerful.
You’ll use it to:
- Spread buttercream evenly
- Fill layers
- Smooth edges
- Create texture
It gives you more control than a regular knife ever could.
Piping bags (disposable and reusable)
You’ll want both options depending on the project.
Disposable bags are great for messy colours and quick cleanup. Reusable ones are amazing when you bake often and want to reduce waste.
Both deserve a place in your baking drawer.
Piping tips
Piping tips are where creativity starts. Start with a basic set that includes:
- Round tip
- Star tip
- Open star
- Leaf tip
That’s honestly enough to decorate most cakes and cupcakes beautifully.
Cake boards and cake drums
These are often overlooked, but they matter so much.
Cake boards are for lighter cakes. Cake drums are thicker and stronger, perfect for heavier or tiered cakes.
Using the right base prevents sliding, cracking, and collapsing when transporting.
You don’t need everything to start
This list may look like a lot — but I promise, these are true foundational tools. You don’t need airbrush machines. You don’t need 200 piping tips. You don’t need every trendy gadget from Instagram.
Start here. Master your basics. Then grow from there.
And honestly? The more confident you feel with your tools, the more creative you’ll become.
